Alcaniz
Alcaniz is the capital of of Low Aragon. The town belongs to
the route of the tambour, named after a two week festival characterised
by drum playing. When approaching Alcaniz, two buildings are
visible above the rest, namely the castle and the church. The
town lies on the river Guadalope, and similar to Teruel,
enjoys considerable Mudejar influences.
The Castle
The Castle of Los Calatravos stands on top of the hill of Cumbre
de Cerro Pui-Pinos. In centuries gone by, the castle defended
the town from its excellent observational position. Martin the
Humane, who was the King of Aragon and Catalonia died there.
However, in the 18th century the castle was converted to an
Argonese palace by Prince Philip. The castle was once the headquarters
of the Order of Calatrava in the 12th century. This building
has now been converted to a Parador
Hotel.
The Church
The second building is the Colegiatia de Santa Maria. This
church may be found on the sloping Plaza de Espana and is the
proud owner of a Gothic tower and Baroque facade.
